This is an example of a family who were obviously listening to someone who gave them incorrect information about dealing with "evil spirits."
This is why I go out of my way exposing so many of these phony pastor's and ministries out there, and there are a lot!
Make no mistake, 'spiritual warfare,' is biblical. Read Ephesians chapter 6 in the New Testament. Jesus Himself spoke a great deal about demonic spirits. But nowhere in the Bible does it speak of using 'candles' to ward off evil spirits!
Incidentally, this family were from Costa Mesa, CA where TBN "Trinity Broadcasting Network's headquarters is located. Not saying that organization had anything to do with this, but nothing but 'false doctrine' comes out of that organization. My heart goes out to this family.
And chances are, they may well have been under demonic oppression. It is biblical. The methods they used were not the best choice to handle this situation. Never leave a candle unattended!
